Small, and in no hurry about it.

LAKE (W.A.) PTY LTD is registered in Western Australia and run from Caves Road at Wilyabrup, between Margaret River and the coast. It is a small operation, and this page carries the parts of it that are any use to a stranger: who the company is, where it sits, how to reach a person, and what it currently has its name on.

Anything else is better said in a conversation than guessed at from a web page, so the address below is a real one and goes to a person rather than a form.

About the name Wilyabrup sits a few kilometres from the Indian Ocean in the south-west corner of the continent. The W.A. in the company's name is the state, not a lake anywhere else.

A thousand-piece jigsaw has at most sixteen interior shapes. Around sixty pieces share each one.

Every cut between two pieces is one decision — a tab on this side, a socket on that. So a piece away from the border is described entirely by four such decisions, which gives sixteen possible shapes and no more. However many pieces a puzzle has, the shapes repeat; what makes a piece unique is the picture printed on it, not the outline. That is why holding one up to a gap works far less often than it feels like it should.

A 25 × 40 board is 1 000 pieces: 126 sit on the border and 874 have four cut edges. Those 874 are distributed over just 16 outlines, so on average 54.6 pieces are the same shape as any one you pick up. Meanwhile the board itself could have been cut in about 10⁵⁸² different ways.

One cut of the chosen board, drawn with the tabs it happens to have. The sixteen shapes are tab or socket on each of four sides; the border pieces have a flat edge instead and so come in fewer varieties still.

This is counting, not a claim about any particular product: four edges, two states each. The figures were checked against a direct construction of the board rather than taken on trust, and they say nothing about how a puzzle feels to sit down with.
